THE REPORT COVERS THE HISTORY, PROGRESS, CURRENT ACTIVITIES, FUTURE PLANS AND RELATIONSHIPS OF THE BUREAU OF PRISONS WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS.
Abstract
THIS INCLUDES A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BUREAU FROM 1930, MAJOR ELEMENTS OF ITS MASTER PLAN AND A SUMMARY OF THE PRESIDENT'S 13-POINT CORRECTIONAL PROGRAM. CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND STAFF TRAINING FOR CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL ARE DESCRIBED. CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS DETAILS ARE GIVEN INCLUDING OFFENDER CLASSIFICATION TECHNIQUES, CORRECTIONAL COUNSELORS, DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAM, FEDERAL PRISON INDUSTRIES INC., AND ASPECTS OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING SUCH AS INDUSTRIAL TRAINING, JOB PLACEMENT, SELF STUDY, AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING. THE STATUS OF HEALTH, RELIGIOUS, AND FOOD SERVICES IS GIVEN. THE REINTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY OF THE OFFENDER THROUGH VARIOUS COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS IS DESCRIBED. CORRECTIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAMS AND EVALUATION OF TECHNOLOGY ASPECTS OF CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS RECEIVED INCREASED EMPHASIS IN 1970 AND 1971. THE BUREAU'S 10YEAR MASTER PLAN IS EXPEDITING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH CENTER IN NORTH CAROLINA AND HAS IDENTIFIED EIGHT METROPOLITAN AREAS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF CORRECTIONAL CENTERS. THE BUREAU'S CONSULTATION EFFORTS ARE NOW MERGED WITH LEAA. THE TECHNICAL OFFICES, STATE AND LOCAL AGENCIES, AND NUMEROUS OTHER AGENCIES IN THE USA AND ABROAD.
