Statistical profiles of the U.S. courts of appeals and the U.S. district courts are presented for the period 1979 through 1984.
Abstract
In 1984, 31,490 cases were filed in the courts of appeals, up from 20,219 in 1979. The number of sitting senior judges also increased, from 41 in 1979 to 50 in 1984. The workload in the District Courts has similarly risen: 177,647 cases were filed in 1979, and 285,563 in 1984. In addition, the number of triable defendants in pending criminal cases rose from 7,176 in 1979 to 10,656 in 1984. The number of judgeships has only risen slightly, from 515 in 1979 to 516 in 1984. Included are 129 tables and 12 maps.
