The data describe initial prosecution decisions, referrals to magistrates, court dispositions, sentencing outcomes, the lengths of sentences imposed, and the length of time served in prison. Both the number of defendants and the percentage rates are presented for each stage of the process. The data for the report came from the Federal justice database of the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The offense classifications in most of the tables were based on the system used by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts; one table uses combinations of offense designations used by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
