This report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics presents statistics on the characteristics of defendants with finalized Federal offenses and includes information regarding their offenses and their sentence outcomes.
Abstract
Major findings from this survey include: in 2008-2009, 14,002 defendants in Australia's criminal courts, 625 defendants in the Higher Courts, 13,207 in the Magistrates' Courts, and 170 in the Children's Courts were finalized with at least one Federal offense; just under two-thirds (63 percent) of all finalized defendants were males; and across all 3 court levels, 77 percent of defendants finalized were found guilty of at least one Federal offense. Finalized defendants include persons charged with Commonwealth criminal offenses for each court level (Higher Courts, Magistrates' Courts, and Children's Courts) as well as organizations charged with Commonwealth criminal offenses at the Higher and Magistrates' Courts levels. Data for this report were collected from all States and Territories in Australia, except for Tasmania, for the period July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. The report is divided into three chapters: chapter 1 provides an introduction to the Federal Defendants collection; chapter 2 presents data about finalized defendants with Federal charges classified to the Australian Standard Offence Classification; and chapter 3 presents data regarding Federal offenses heard in the criminal courts and classified according to a non-standard group of offenses.
