Investigative personnel at 32 Federal agencies that employ from 25 to 699 such law enforcement personnel were studied with respect to the types of violations that these personnel investigate and the authoritization under which they investigate suspected Federal criminal law violations, execute search warrants, make arrests, and carry firearms.
Abstract
The research also focused on the number of law enforcement investigative personnel in these organizations as of September 30, 1996 and the number of these personnel who were authorized to execute search warrants, make arrests, and/or carry firearms. In addition, it focused on how the number of law enforcement investigative personnel in these organizations has changed since the end of fiscal year 1987. Data were collected from the records of the United States Office of Personnel Management and from a survey of the organizations studied. Results revealed that these organizations employed 4,262 law enforcement investigative personnel. About 94 percent were authorized to execute search warrants, make arrests, and carry firearms. The number of law enforcement investigative personnel at these agencies increase by 70 percent between the ends of fiscal years 1987 and 1996.
