CAREER PATHS OF DIFFERENT CRIMINAL TYPES ARE TRACED FROM THEIR EARLY ENVIRONMENTS AND PRISON EXPERIENCE THROUGH PAROLE.
Abstract
OFFENDERS ARE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO THEIR DEGREE OF INVOLVEMENT WITH SPECIFIC CRIMINAL SUBCULTURES. THE SUBCULTURAL PERSPECTIVE AND IDENTITY WHICH THE OFFENDER GAINS THROUGH INTERACTION WITH SIMILAR OFFENDERS ARE SEEN TO STRUCTURE HIS EXPERIENCES WITH THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS- ARREST, SENTENCING, IMPRISONMENT, AND RELEASE. CONCENTRATING ON THE OBSTACLES THAT CONFRONT THE FELON IN HIS ATTEMPTS TO REENTER SOCIETY, IT IS ARGUED THAT THE REHABILITATIVE PROCESS FAILS TO OFFER ALTERNATIVE LIFE STYLES TO HIM. MANY OFFENDERS RELAPSE INTO THE BEHAVIOR PATTERN OF THEIR PARTICULAR SUBCULTURE.
