This quarterly report (January-March 1990) on California felony statistics covers the number of convictions and types of dispositions.
Abstract
Data on felony convictions cover the actual number for 1989 and the projected number for 1990 based on the number of convictions in the first quarter. Convictions are presented under the categories of crimes against persons, crimes against property, drug law violations, and other crimes. A summary of dispositions in felony convictions compares the current rate of prison commitments with the commitment rates over the past few years and at the beginning of determinate sentencing. The only significant change since mid-1985 is the increased prison commitment rate for felony drug law violations (from 25 to 40 percent for all drug law violations). Another table indicates the total incarceration rate, considering both prison and jail but excluding other dispositions, such as Youth Authority commitments. The rates of prison commitments by appellate district are shown, indicating that the differences in prison commitment rates in various areas of the State continue in the pattern shown in previous Quarterlies. Statistics on the length of determinate prison sentences are shown, and another table indicates that none of the high-volume crimes showed a significant change in average sentence length from quarter to quarter over the past several years. Superior Court felony dispositions are presented for the quarter ending December 31, 1990. 13 tables
