These California statistics, derived from case reports received from superior courts, address the number and category of felony convictions, dispositions of felony convictions, felony convictions by appellate district, determinate sentencing, the number of death sentences, and the impact of drug cases on trial court volume.
Abstract
The number and category of felony convictions show prison commitments per 100 convictions for selected crimes for 6-month periods that ended December 1977-June 1981 and June 1984-June 1991, as well as quarters that ended March 1991-September 1991. A summary of dispositions for felony convictions indicates the number and percentage of convicted defendants incarcerated for quarters that ended December 1985-September 1991. The table for felony convictions by appellate district presents the number of prison commitments per 100 convictions for selected crimes in the 6-month periods that ended June 1986-June 1991 and third quarter 1991. Determinate sentencing statistics indicate the average determinate sentence imposed for selected crimes for quarters from March 31, 1984-September 30, 1991. There were 5 reported death penalties issued among the 89 first-degree murder convictions in the quarter that ended September 30, 1991. Eight tables present superior court dispositions for the quarter that ended September 30, 1991.
