This study examined the sexual behavior of a sample of 1,134 adolescent girls who reported either parent as using hard liquor daily.
Abstract
Sexual behaviors and outcomes were measured by a self-report questionnaire which asked respondents about the frequency of sexual intercourse, age of first sexual debut, kind and frequency of contraception used, and pregnancy history. The findings confirmed other studies showing that parental alcohol misuse constitutes a risk factor for their children. Index female adolescents were significantly different from adolescents in the general population in terms of whether or not they had had sexual intercourse, frequency of intercourse, history of pregnancy, and overall pregnancy risk. Discriminant analysis and logistic regression revealed that the most salient protective and risk factors for adolescent pregnancy among this sample were presence of two parents in the home, history of physical abuse, mother's education level, high levels of perceived vandalism in school, and age of the adolescent. 5 tables and 41 references
