CULTURAL AND PERSONALITY PATTERNS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN CLASSIFYING DELINQUENTS FOR TREATMENT, THUS PROVIDING A MORE ACCURATE BASIS FOR EVALUATION THAN FOUND IN WARREN'S TYPOLOGY.
Abstract
THIS EVALUATION IS BASED ON THE RESPONSES OF 234 GIRLS COMMITTED TO A YOUTH CENTER BECAUSE OF DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR. EACH GIRL WAS GIVEN SEVERAL TESTS. A Q-FACTOR ANALYSIS WAS PERFORMED ON THEIR RESPONSES TO THE QUAY PERSONAL OPINION STUDY, AND 13 FACTOR TYPES EMERGED. THESE WERE COMPARED WITH SIX PERSONALITY TYPES DEFINED BY WARREN'S TYPOLOGY OF DELINQUENT PERSONALITY PATTERNS AND A CLOSE SIMILARITY WAS SEEN. THE GIRLS WERE ALSO QUESTIONED ABOUT PERSONAL AND FAMILY LIFE TO ASCERTAIN THEIR SOCIAL SITUATIONS. SIMILAR PERSONALITY TYPES OFTEN DISPLAY SHARPLY DIFFERENT BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS BECAUSE OF DIFFERENT SOCIAL SITUATIONS. A SINGLE THEORY OF PERSONALITY SHOULD BE EFFECTIVE IN EXPLAINING MALE AND FEMALE DELINQUENCY, AND WHILE THE PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPONENT CANNOT BE IGNORED, BEHAVIOR REFLECTS OTHER FACTORS AS WELL. (RFC)
