DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN OFFENDERS BOTH IN CORRECTIONS FACILITIES OFFERED AND IN THE REASONING BEHIND THEIR ARREST WAS A MAJOR THEME AT THE 1979 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THE FEMALE OFFENDER.
Abstract
ARTICLES DEALING WITH THE SYMPOSIUM TOPIC DESCRIBE PROPOSALS BY THE CANADIAN SOLICITOR GENERAL TO CLOSE THE WOMEN'S PRISON IN KINGSTON, ONTARIO; THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CO-CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES; AND A PROFILE OF THE CURRENT FEMALE OFFENDER. ALSO INCLUDED IS A CONFERENCE PAPER ON THE TREATMENT OF FEMALE DELINQUENTS IN THE AMERICAN JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THE DEGREE TO WHICH PARTICULAR ATTITUDES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LABELING OF YOUNG WOMEN AS CRIMINALS. THE PAPER COVERS JUVENILE COURTS AND FEMALE DELINQUENCY, CONFLICTS BETWEEN PARENTS AND DAUGHTERS, YOUNG WOMEN AND POLICE ATTITUDES, DETENTION IN RELATION TO PROTECTION OR PUNISHMENT, AND JUDICIAL PATERNALISM. THE EFFECTS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ON INDIAN WOMEN ARE DISCUSSED, AND BRIEF COMMENTS BY TWO PRISON ADMINISTRATORS ARE PROVIDED. ADDITIONAL ARTICLES COVER TOPICS OF SEXUAL REALITIES INSIDE PRISONS AND COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS CENTERS, AND PRESENT DESCRIPTIONS OF FOUR INMATES. A LIST OF RECOMMENDATIONS ADOPTED BY THE CONFERENCE DELEGATES RESOLVES THAT CERTAIN STATUS OFFENSES SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE CRIMINAL CODE AND THAT CERTAIN COMPULSORY DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAMS SHOULD BE DISCONTINUED. IN ADDITION, NEEDED CHANGES SUGGESTED BY THE DELEGATES ARE LISTED. (AOP)
