Abstract
THE AUTHOR ILLUSTRATES THE NEED FOR A VARIETY OF HALFWAY HOUSES BY RELATING CASE HISTORIES OF A FEW FEMALE RELEASEES WHOSE RE-ENTRY INTO SOCIETY HALFWAY HOUSES HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. IT IS ARGUED THAT SOME WOMEN NEED AND THRIVE UNDER GREATER CONTROL WHEREAS OTHERS CAN COPE WITH THEIR NEW FREEDOM IN A LESS REGIMENTED ENVIRONMENT. FOR SUCCESS THE HALFWAY HOUSE MUST BUILD A MULTIRACIAL, KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF SENSITIVE TO THE FEMALE EX-OFFENDERS, AND TO NEEDS AND RESOURCES OF THE COMMUNITY, IN WHICH THE HALFWAY HOUSE IS LOCATED.
