This report examines trends and patterns in female criminality and the criminal justice processing of women in New York State between 1970 and 1984.
Abstract
Data indicate trends in female arrest rates by age, race, and region; compare trends in male and female crime; and examine trends in the types of crime committed by women. An analysis of trends in New York's criminal justice processing of women addresses conviction rates, charge reduction, sentence type, and incarceration rates. The processing of male and females is compared, and incarceration rates of female offenders are indicated by age and race. Findings presented from a number of reports by New York criminal justice agencies pertain to females on probation, in jail, in prison, and on parole. Alternatives to incarceration for women are also reviewed. The report identifies issues having implications for program development and planning for the female offender population, particularly in State and local corrections. Suggestions also cover future research on female offenders. An 18-item bibliography and graphic and tabular data.
