The Suffolk County, New York, Police Department's Field Training Program is intended to supplement police recruit training at the police academy and is administered by the police department's Patrol Division.
Abstract
The Field Training Program has six objectives: (1) produce highly trained and positively motivated police officers; (2) provide equal and standardized field training to all probationary police officers; (3) expand on the foundation of knowledge provided at the police academy; (4) field train in multiple precincts to offer different training environments; (5) improve the police department's selection process by providing on-the-job observation and documentation of each probationary police officer's performance; and (6) establish an appraisal system which is directly job-related and uses a standard approach to document and evaluate probationary police officer performance. The manual for the Field Training Program covers program structure; the Recruit Field Training Guide which organizes the Field Training Program by identifying what is to be taught and when; field training instructional and evaluation processes; duties and responsibilities of police recruits, patrol supervisors, and precinct field training coordinators; and selection criteria for field training officers. Performance standards established by the Field Training Program are designed to ensure that each police officer who completes the program meets requirements of the Suffolk County Police Department.
