Guidelines are provided for training new officers in smaller police departments.
Abstract
Proper training is the only way to develop officers of the caliber needed to function in all aspects of a small police department. A field training officer program (FTO) is one of the most important programs a small police department can develop. Components of Ohio's FTO training program include a three-page checklist for the field training officer to cover with each new officer and a "Reports and Forms Manual," which contains the complete paperwork for each type of arrest and serves as a valuable reference. These guidelines provide instruction about FTO selection and the need for FTO's to keep current about new officer training methods and techniques.
