This notebook presents resource materials for workshops of the Fifteenth National Symposium on Child Sexual Abuse, held March 9-12, 1999, in Huntsville, Ala.; the workshops provide training in a number of issues related to prevention, intervention, and treatment of child sexual abuse.
Abstract
The workshops are designed for the following professional groups: Federal employees, supervisors, law enforcement personnel, educators, child protection workers, medical professionals, attorneys, volunteers, therapists, researchers, judges, and juvenile workers. The materials presented in this notebook provide symposium participants with overviews of the topics to be considered in the workshops. The workshops address issues in the general areas of administration, intervention, investigation, law, medical services, mental health services, prevention, and research. Workshop topics in the area of administration focus on such issues as securing funding for a child abuse diagnostic and treatment center, grant writing, funding strategies and programs, and the supervision of child sexual abuse forensic interviewers. Workshop topics in the area of intervention include intervention with nonoffending parents, children who witness domestic violence, extended forensic evaluation of children when sexual abuse is suspected, and a parent support network. Workshops pertinent to case investigations address such topics as child protection team investigation strategies, the effective use of the polygraph in child abuse investigations, and forensic applications in child abuse investigations. Workshops on law focus on various issues in the formal legal processing of child sexual abuse cases, and the workshops in the area of medical services consider diagnostic and treatment issues. Mental health services for victims and their families, principles underlying prevention strategies, and findings from three research programs are covered in other workshops. The symposium agenda and a CD-ROM with symposium information are also included in the notebook.
