This illustrated booklet and CD-ROM focus on youth violence, ways that youth are participating in community volunteer programs to prevent crime and violence, and ways that the user of the materials can become involved in these prevention efforts.
Abstract
The text notes that 1 in 12 high school students is threatened or injured with a weapon each year, that 5 percent of 12th graders in 1996 reported that they had been injured with a weapon during their previous year at school. However, fewer than 1 percent of violent deaths of children occur on school grounds. Violent juvenile crime peaks during the after-school hours. Factors that cause violence include living in a violent home or neighborhood, lack of training in peaceful communications, peer pressure, easy access to weapons, and early involvement with drugs and alcohol. Potential solutions include conflict resolution programs, mentoring programs, the use of the arts to help change the way others feel about violence, youth crime watch programs, and advocacy. Photographs and lists of resources for each strategy and for other issues related to violence and violence prevention
