This is a periodic report of the Maricopa County (AZ) Adult Probation Department Day Reporting Center (DRC).
Abstract
The DRC program began in August 1992. Its mission is to reintegrate adult offenders into society, to help relieve jail overcrowding. It targets nonviolent prisoners with less than 60 days remaining in their term, for furlough into programs of strict community supervision and structured reintegration services. Education is a key component to successful reintegration. During the period from August 24, 1992 to May 31, 1993, the DRC assessed 133 clients, 46 of whom needed a GED. Of these, 86 percent participated in the DRC Education Program. Of the 20 DRC clients who tested for a GED, 15 passed. The DRC notes that its Education Program participants showed an improvement in attitude. Sections of this report highlight educational results, DRC tutors, noncooperative students, "amazing transformations," and other help from DRC clients. Appendixes include, among other things, two thank-you letters from clients and two clippings of positive articles about DRC. 12 appendixes
