This book is offered as a guide for parents of children affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) to assist in the creation of prevention strategies and intervention techniques using the Organic Brain Dysfunction (OBD) 3-Step Plan of action.
Abstract
The OBD 3-Step Plan of action consists of designing prevention strategies and intervention techniques based on the overall executive functioning of the individual. The focus is on identification of strengths and interests, while acknowledging the child’s limitations. It is crucial to incorporate parenting and teaching styles into the plan in order to create ideas that work for both the parent and the child. Consistency is imperative in the home and school and within the community. The philosophy of the Organic Brain Dysfunction (OBD) 3-Step Plan attempts to provide the best possible chance of success for those children affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and the families that care for them. FASD was medically labeled in 1973. However, no two individuals are affected by prenatal alcohol exposure exactly the same way. The overall goal of this book is to provide specialized prevention techniques and intervention strategies designed for the patient’s unique abilities, as opposed to a generalized FASD approach. The OBD 3-Step Plan of action consists of designing prevention strategies and intervention techniques based on the overall executive functioning of the individual. Most of the ideas in the book have been established in foundation and practice by real experts, the parents.
