Abstract
The goal of the hearing was to learn from law enforcement officials, judges, prosecutors, advocates and survivors of domestic violence where the system has failed and how it could be improved. The report contains summaries and recommendations in the following categories: (1) Defining Domestic Violence (including a redefinition of family); (2) First Response: The Police Department; (3) Prosecuting Domestic Violence Cases: The District Attorney; (4) Domestic Violence and the Courts: Towards an Interdisciplinary Approach; (5) Conviction and Beyond: Incarceration, Treatment and Community Corrections; (6) Beyond Criminal Justice Solutions: Social Services for Victims; (7) Domestic Violence as a Public Health Issue; and (8) A Legislative Package to Strengthen the Criminal Justice Response to Domestic Violence.
