Several new fingerprint detection techniques suggested in the research literature were applied to the detection of fingerprints deposited on the skin of 16 live persons and 23 cadavers, 16 of which had not been placed in the cold room before the experiment.
Abstract
Techniques used included powdering, transfer techniques onto glass or photographic paper, iodine fuming followed by silver plate transfer, ruthenium tetroxide fuming, cyanoacrylate fuming, and filter paper soaked with a cyanoacrylate/ether solution. Results of the research, combined with related with related comments in the literature, casework experiences, and current forensic practices, produced an inventory of the factors influencing the detection of fingerprints on skin. Fingerprint detection sequences on skin were subsequently developed. Findings indicated that the chances of developing a latent fingerprint are very limited on living subjects and that on cadavers it is important to meticulously examine the skin service before determining a particular detection technique.
