A COMPREHENSIVE DISCUSSION OF FINGERPRINT TECHNIQUES WITH MOST OF THE EMPHASIS PLACED ON PATTERN INTERPRETATION AND CLASSIFICATION SCHEMES.
Abstract
THIS BOOK BEGINS WITH A CHAPTER ON THE HISTORY OF FINGERPRINTING, WHICH TRACES ITS ORIGINS TO NEOLITHIC CAVES OFF THE COAST OF BRITTANY. THE NATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF FRICTION SKIN ARE EXAMINED INCLUDING CONGENITAL ABNORMALITIES AND DERMABRASION (THE SANDING OR SURGICAL REMOVAL OF FINGERPRINTS). A SECTION ON PATTERN INTERPRETATION PRECEDES A DISCUSSION OF LATENT PRINT LIFTING TECHNIQUES AND DEVELOPMENT METHODS. FINGERPRINT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS THAT ARE USED IN THE UNITED STATES ARE PRESENTED AS WELL AS OTHER TYPES OF CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS. THESE INCLUDE THE CANADIAN, VUCETICH AND BATTLEY FINGERPRINT SYSTEM AS WELL AS THE CHATTERJEE SOLEPRINT SYSTEM AND THE BROGGER MOLLER PALMPRINT SYSTEM. FINGERPRINT FILING AND SEARCHING TECHNIQUES ARE DISCUSSED INCLUDING THE ADVANCES IN AUTOMATIC CODING AND SEARCHING DEVELOPED BY NYSIIS (NEW YORK STATE IDENTIFICATION AND INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM). THE TEXT CLOSES WITH CHAPTERS DEALING WITH EVIDENCE RELIABILITY AND PRESENTATION AND WITH MEDICAL RESEARCH IN FINGERPRINT APPLICATIONS. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY CONTAINS APPROXIMATELY 500 CITATIONS.
