Prepared for corrections managers with little or no fire protection background, this training manual teaches both supervisory and line staff methods for dealing with fires without compromising facility security.
Abstract
The first unit, presenting a history of the problem, covers individual case summaries, common characteristics of fires in correctional institutions, and the impact of the security factor. Subsequent units outline a systems approach to dealing with fires and explain five goals of a simplified fire safety system for correctional facilities: ignition control, fuel control, occupant protection, detection and suppression activities, and planning and training operations. The final unit asks students to prepare a comprehensive fire safety plan and provides guidelines to accomplish this assignment. It also addresses sources of financial and technical assistance. Each chapter provides basic information, a method for organizing the course content, class exercises, content summaries, a list of performance objectives, and a chapter review test. Photographs, diagrams, glossary, and bibliography.
