This article describes a new system for use in police officer marksmanship training.
Abstract
Firearms training must be ongoing to provide officers with skills needed in a gunfight. In addition, officers need feedback, which is frequently not available with conventional firearms training. BEAMHIT of Columbia, Maryland, offers an inexpensive laser marksmanship trainer that includes feedback on sight alignment and grip and trigger control. The BEAMHIT 110 Professional Training System consists of a laser transmitter, three mandrels of selected calibers and a battery-powered 4-inch target. When the target is hit, the system displays the number of hits, flashes lights and sounds a beep. The BEAMHIT 330A System features a computerized target linked to a personal computer or laptop. The computer screen shows instantly where each laser beam hit in real-time. The target detects where a laser bullet hit and communicates to the computer precise point of impact on up to 15 hits. It also submits information on the total and elapsed time of fire, maximum dispersion within a shot group, mean point of impact, and total score. The article includes further data on capabilities of the systems, training for and using the systems, and experiences of some departments.
