This article describes the Chief's Special course offered by the Gunsite Training Academy, which allows police department heads to have a sampling of the firearms training available at the Academy for their officers.
Abstract
The Chief's Special course is designed to expose senior administrators of State, local, and Federal agencies to Gunsite's training methods and opportunities. It is expected that those who attend the course are in a position to evaluate training methods and equipment for their departments. The course can be compared to the auditing of a college class, in that it provides the attendee a body of knowledge with which to critically evaluate training. The Chief's Special course compresses the regular 5-day basic pistol course, the 5-day basic carbine course, and the 3-day shotgun course into 2 days of pistol, 2 days of carbine, and 1 day of shotgun. This article details each day's activities. The basis of all the training at Gunsite is the Modern Technique developed by Col. Jeff Cooper. The basis of this training approach is the combat triad of gunhandling, marksmanship, and mindset. The Chief's Special course not only exposes police administrators to the Gunsite training methods but also updates them on current trends in firearms training across the country. The administrator who recognizes his/her need for updated, high-speed firearms training would be well served by considering Gunsite as a valuable resource.
