This article discusses ideas concerning the recruitment of potential employees to the corrections profession.
Abstract
The article notes the challenges in recruitment of qualified persons to enter the field of corrections work, and offers a variety of ideas to consider for more effective recruitment. It discusses the need to provide a more viable marketing of the business in a way that is generationally relevant. The article exhorts the reader to change from the traditional means of recruitment such as want ads and generic job fairs in order to catch the interest of potential applicants. Suggestions include online application processes, internet applications, and theater advertisement. Enticement packages mentioned include a touting of the diversity to be found in the occupation by use of exemplary employees for recruiting staff that represent the community and the needs of the organization; a presentation of the benefits to be found in today’s corrections employment environment; and possible educational and housing assistance. Other concepts mentioned are increased interaction with colleges and universities, career-directed programs in magnet high schools, increased use of employees to market the profession to prospective employees, and greater use of the media.
