Abstract
The book's emphasis is on developing physical fitness to improve job performance and health, as well as to enhance enjoyment of leisure time. Part I of the handbook sets the stage for the rest of the book. One chapter discusses why fitness is important for law enforcement officers, and another chapter allows readers to assess their own fitness. Part II explains physical fitness. It describes the components of physical fitness: how to design a program and how to set goals and evaluate progress. The chapters address the principles of exercise, cardiovascular endurance conditioning, muscular strength and endurance conditioning, flexibility, and anaerobic fitness. Part III discusses the lifestyle components of fitness. This part teaches how lifestyle components affect health and job performance and where to go for additional help. It includes chapters on nutrition, weight management, stress management, smoking cessation, and substance-abuse prevention. Throughout the book, examples based on fictional characters demonstrate each step of the process.
