In order to assess a police officer's muscular and aerobic fitness levels and to influence the health risk factors that impact on his cardiovascular health, the University of Delaware and the New Castle County Police Department have adopted the diagnostic and preventive approach developed by Cardio-Kinetics, Inc.
Abstract
This method of evaluation employs sophisticated testing equipment and includes follow-up testing every 6 to 12 months. The benefits to the department include reduced absenteeism, improved morale, and decreased disabilities and health care expenditures; employees alter their behaviors which prevent risk factors including blood pressure, obesity, smoking, and inactivity. Cardio-Kinetics is based on the premise that if given reasonable criteria to improve cardiovascular fitness levels, individuals can better comply with an overall fitness program. The key to affecting lifestyle changes is to involve the individual in the testing process and to present fitness and health information in a positive manner. 5 tables
