STATISTICS ARE PRESENTED ON THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS PART I INDEX CRIMES IN TERMS OF NUMBER, RATE, AND LOCATION, AND ON THE NUMBERS OF CASES OR PERSONS INVOLVED IN EACH SUBSECTION OF THE ADULT CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THESE STATISTICS CONSIDER THE INCIDENCE OF MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, BREAKING AND ENTERING, LARCENY, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT IN FLORIDA THE CRIMES ARE DISCUSSED FOR THE WHOLE STATE, FOR 11 GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS DESIGNATED AS 'HIGH CRIME INCIDENCE (HCI)' AREAS, AND FOR MONROE COUNTY. THE HIGH INDEX CRIME AMOUNT AND RATE INDICATE THAT FLORIDA HAS ONE OF THE NATION'S MOST SEVERE INDEX CRIME PROBLEMS. BETWEEN 1971 AND 1975, THE AMOUNT OF INDEX CRIME INCREASED 61.7 PERCENT IN THE STATE. RAPE WAS THE MOST RAPIDLY INCREASING REPORTED CRIME FOR THE STATE AND FOR THE HCI AREA, BUT THE INCREASE MAY BE DUE PARTLY TO ENHANCED ENCOURAGEMENT TO REPORTING THE CRIME. THE LEAST RAPID INCREASE FOR AN INDEX CRIME WAS FOR MURDER. THE INCIDENCES OF CRIME TEND TO BE CONCENTRATED IN THE POPULATION CENTERS OF THE STATE. STATEWIDE, THE TWO GROUPS, 0-14 YEAR OLDS AND 25-44-YEAR OLDS, MAKE UP THE LARGEST PART OF THE POPULATION, BUT THE GROUP OF 15-24 YEAR OLDS ACCOUNT FOR THE LARGEST INCIDENCE OF REPORTED CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. THE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE SECTION OF THE REPORT PRESENTS STATISTICS ON CLEARANCE AND ARREST RATES FOR THE AREAS INDICATED ALONG WITH PROSECUTION RATES, SENTENCING PATTERNS, AND CONVICTION RATES FOR THE VARIOUS INDEX CRIMES. A SET OF TABLES SHOWS THE PERCENTAGE DISTRIBUTION FOR OFFENSES, ARRESTS, PROSECUTIONS BEGUN, CONVICTIONS OBTAINED AND PRISON INTAKES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--DAG)
