This videocassette and accompanying instructor's guide comprise a curricula to be used for law enforcement patrol and correctional officer basic training. The curricula is designed to provide recruits with basic defensive tactics skills and a framework, the Use of Force Matrix, to make decisions.
Abstract
The curricula includes a 64-hour lesson plan for the patrol officer, a 60-hour lesson plan for the correctional officer, and an 80-hour course plan for instructors. The instructor's guide provides lesson outlines and helpful notes which correspond to the goals and objectives in the basic recruit curriculum. This curricula is considered the minimum level of training. Training schools wishing to go beyond should feel free to do so in accordance with their individual facility capacity, instructional resources, and specialized needs. The Use of Force/Levels of Resistance Matrix is emphasized throughout the courses and is meant to be used as a guideline for an officer to select effective reasonable and legal force options in a verbal or physical encounter. The six levels of resistance are discussed, and the various ways of dealing with them are the basis of the courses. The patrol officer course has 16 learning goals, while the correctional officer course has 15 learning goals in inmate control.
