CONTRASTS THE DATA ON RESULTS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH SERVICES GROUP TREATMENT AND TRAINING SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND MAKES SOME TENTATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING SELECTION CRITERIA AND PROGRAM CHANGES.
Abstract
IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE PROGRAMS, AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO IDENTIFY CHARACTERISTICS OF CHILDREN ASSOCIATED WITH SUCCESS OR FAILURE IN BOTH PROGRAMS. DATA WAS GATHERED BY EXAMINING CASE RECORDS TO DETERMINE FACTORS WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO SUCCESS OR FAILURE IN AFTERCARE, AS DEFINED BY REINSTITUTIONALIZATION. IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT THE PROGRAMS BE MODIFIED TO DEAL MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH BLACK CHILDREN AND VERY YOUNG OFFENDERS. ALSO, IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT FIRST COMMITMENT OFFENDERS BE GIVEN ASSIGNMENT PRIORITY TO GROUP TREATMENT FACILITIES, DUE TO THE HIGH SUCCESS RATE THERE. FINALLY, IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT AFTERCARE SUPERVISION OF JUVENILES BE INTENSIFIED DURING THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF THEIR REENTRY INTO THE COMMUNITY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...KAP
