THIS 1973 ANNUAL REPORT OF FLORIDA CRIME INCLUDES STATISTICS FOR 30 DIFFERENT TYPES OF OFFENSES AND LAW ENFORCEMENT EMPLOYEE DATA.
Abstract
A TOTAL OF 328 JURISDICTIONS IN FLORIDA CONTRIBUTED TO THIS REPORT. OFFENSES FALL INTO TWO MAJOR CATEGORIES: PART I, WHICH INCLUDES MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, LARCENY, BREAKING AND ENTERING, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT; AND PART II, WHICH INCLUDES OTHER OFFENSES, SUCH AS ARSON, FORGERY, VANDALISM, PROSTITUTION, AND VIOLATIONS OF CITY AND STATE ORDINANCES. PART I CRIMES INCREASED 11.3 PERCENT OVER 1972, AND VIOLENT CRIMES INCREASED 15.3 PERCENT, PRODUCING A CRIME RATE OF 5,836 PER 100,000 POPULATION. LARCENY WAS THE LARGEST SINGLE CATEGORY. PROPERTY WORTH $149 MILLION WAS REPORTED STOLEN, A 36.3 PERCENT INCREASE OVER 1972. THERE WERE 1,182 MURDERS FOR 1973, UP 25 PERCENT OVER 1972, AND 4 FLORIDA LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS WERE KILLED. THE PART I CRIME CLEARANCE RATE FOR THE YEAR WAS 22 PERCENT, EQUAL TO THAT OF 1972; ARRESTS FOR THESE CRIMES WERE 81,800 OUT OF A STATE TOTAL OF 387,337 ARRESTS. JUVENILES UNDER 17 ACCOUNTED FOR 19.1 PERCENT OF ALL ARRESTS. OUT OF 25,437 ARRESTS FOR NARCOTIC DRUG VIOLATIONS, 62.3 PERCENT WERE OF PERSONS UNDER 21. OF 3,103 REPORTED ARRESTS FOR GAMBLING, 92.5 PERCENT WERE OF MALES. HOWEVER, GAMBLING ARRESTS DECLINED 10.3 PERCENT FROM 1972. THERE WERE 19,134 FULL-TIME LAW ENFORCEMENT EMPLOYEES IN FLORIDA IN 1973, NOT COUNTING 2,818 COLLEGE CAMPUS AND STATE POLICE. CHARTS, TABLES, A MAP, AND A GLOSSARY ARE INCLUDED. (PAP)
