STATISTICS ON INDEX CRIMES, ARRESTS, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL ARE PRESENTED IN FLORIDA'S 1978 UNIFORM CRIME REPORT.
Abstract
THE REPORT OPENS WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE'S CRIME-REPORTING SYSTEM, A CLASSIFICATION OF OFFENSES INCLUDED IN THE REPORT, AND A DISCUSSION OF THE REPORT'S USES. DATA ARE PRESENTED ON THE INDEX OFFENSES OF MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, BURGLARY, LARCENY, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT. INCLUDED ARE STATISTICS ON OFFENSE VOLUMES AND RATES; DATA ON SPECIFIC TYPES OF OFFENSES, WEAPONS USED, STOLEN PROPERTY, AND CLEARANCE RATES; BREAKDOWNS BY COUNTY, STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREA, COMMUNITY, AND COMMUNITY TYPE (URBAN, RURAL, SUBURBAN); AND COMPARISONS WITH PRIOR YEARS. ARREST STATISTICS INCLUDE DEMOGRAPHIC DATA ON ARRESTEES (AGE, SEX, RACE), ANALYSES OF DRUG AND GAMBLING ARRESTS, STATISTICS ON ARRESTS FOR VIOLENT AND NONVIOLENT CRIMES, DISPOSITIONAL DATA ON JUVENILE ARRESTEES, AND BREAKDOWNS BY COUNTY AND COMMUNITY. DURING THE YEAR, THE INDEX CRIME VOLUME INCREASED 6.8 PERCENT. THE GREATEST INCREASE (18.5 PERCENT) WAS IN FORCIBLE RAPE. THE CRIME RATE INCREASED TO 67.7 INDEX CRIMES (7.3 VIOLENT AND 60.4 NONVIOLENT) FOR EVERY 1,000 RESIDENTS. THERE WAS A 27-PERCENT INCREASE IN THE VALUE OF STOLEN PROPERTY. THE CLEARANCE RATE FOR ALL INDEX CRIME WAS 23.2 PERCENT (55.4 PERCENT FOR VIOLENT CRIME, 19.3 PERCENT FOR NONVIOLENT CRIME). ARRESTS FOR INDEX CRIMES INCREASED 12.6 PERCENT. THE REPORT ALSO PRESENTS STATISTICS ON THE NUMBERS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ASSAULTED AND KILLED DURING THE YEAR AND ON POLICE-POPULATION RATIOS. A GLOSSARY AND A JURISDICTION INDEX ARE PROVIDED.
