Abstract
The report identifies significant changes in Florida's prison population from March 31, 1991, to March 31, 1992. Florida's prison population increased by 1,517 inmates (+3.4 percent) from 44,921 to 46,438, and prison capacity increased by 2,112 beds. The female population decreased by 88 (-3.4 percent) from 2,584 to 2,496. Race demographics show continuing change. The number of black inmates increased 1,367 (+5.3 percent); the number of white inmates decreased 153 (-0.8 percent). For the female population, white female inmates decreased by 107 (-10.2 percent) and Hispanic females decreased by 5 (-8.8 percent); black female inmates decreased by 35 (-2.3 percent). Drug offenders continued to comprise the largest percentage of the total prison population at 9,266 (20.5 percent), but inmates imprisoned for robbery increased 621 (+9.4 percent). Female drug offenders decreased 197 (-14.2 percent), but females committed for second degree murder increased 34 (+20.2 percent). 7 notes and 2 tables
