Abstract
Materials for the monograph were provided by representatives of law, education, Federal and State agencies, juvenile justice, law enforcement, social services, medical and health services, community agencies, parent groups, and symposium participants. The rising rate of violence in schools and in society provided impetus for the symposium. The meeting's purpose was to identify successful youth programs which decrease violence in schools and communities; develop alternative plans to decrease violence and constructively channel the energies of youth; and implement techniques for effective use of programs to decrease violence by utilizing and expanding the services of educational institutions, the judiciary, private and public sectors, law enforcement, and community resources. Legislative action programs for constructive involvement of youths were also encouraged. All sessions were directed toward solving problems and implementing programs which decrease violence. Specific concerns and programs discussed in the workshops and in the presentations included food and aggression, developing effective leadership in schools, California's school improvement program, youth probation, child abuse, and drug and alcohol abuse. National awards for outstanding youth involvement programs were presented to the Student Committee on Vandalism of La Follette High School (Madison, Wis.), the Youth Advocacy Teacher Corps Program of Oakland University and Farmington public schools, and the San Bernardino County Probation Department's Community Service Teams Program. Photographs, a 45-entry bibliography, and a list of participant names and addresses are provided.
