AN EDUCATIONAL PROCESS THAT ASSIGNS STUDENTS TO FELONY CASES FROM ARREST TO DISCHARGE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM FROM A LIBERAL ARTS POINT OF VIEW.
Abstract
A VARIABLE CREDIT COURSE GIVES STUDENTS ONE CREDIT THE FIRST QUARTER, AND ADDITIONAL CREDITS ARE EARNED IN SUBSEQUENT QUARTERS AT A RATE PARALLELING THE RATE OF PROGRESS OF THE CASE. BEFORE BEING ASSIGNED A CASE, THE STUDENT RIDES ALONG ON ONE SHIFT OF A PATROL IN LIEU OF OBSERVING A FELONY ARREST. AFTER HAVING RECEIVED PERMISSION FROM DEFENSE ATTORNEYS OF ASSIGNED CASES, STUDENTS ATTEND ALL HEARINGS, ARRAIGNMENTS, TRIALS, AND SENTENCINGS HAVING TO DO WITH THEIR CASES. STUDENTS ARE EXCLUDED FROM PLEA BARGAINING SESSIONS, AND ARE GENERALLY NOT PERMITTED TO CONVERSE WITH DEFENDANTS ABOUT ANY ASPECT OF THEIR CASE. STUDENT LEARNING AND ANALYSIS IS CRYSTALLIZED THROUGH ORGANIZED DISCUSSIONS WITH OTHER STUDENTS AND PAPERS WRITTEN ON SOME ASPECT OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM REVEALED IN THE CASE PROCESSING.
