This study examined the effect of participation in a family reunion program on recidivism among a selected sample of 400 male, New York State inmates who had participated in the program in 1982.
Abstract
The program enables eligible inmates to meet with their families in private during incarceration. The objective of the program is to strengthen family relationships and thus reduce postrelease involvement in criminal activity. Of these participants, 204 had been released by December 1984. Results of a minimum 12-month followup indicates that participants had a significantly lower recidivism rate (19.6 percent) than that projected for the overall population (26.5 percent). Results suggest that the program had a positive effect on postrelease adjustment as measured by recidivism. 5 references. (Author abstract modified)
