This evaluation study found that satisfactory participation in the work release program of the Fishkill Correctional Facility (New York) was positively related to successful postrelease adjustment as measured by returns to the custody of the State's correctional department. This finding is the same as that for a similar study of the work release program of the Rochester Correctional Facility.
Abstract
Study data came from the 179 inmates who satisfactorily participated in the Fishkill Correctional Facility work release program and were released from 1979 through 1982. A previous evaluation study focused on the experience of the Rochester Work Release Program. The 179 participants in the Fishkill program were tracked through December 31, 1983. Instead of having the projected return rate of 29.6 percent, the participants had an actual return rate of 15.6 percent during the study period. Thus, the program, combined with the offenders' motivations and capabilities, produced a lower rate of return. Data do not permit definitive conclusions concerning the overall impact of the statewide work release program. Data tables are included.
