To determine if participation in a prerelease program affected recidivism, 119 male, New York State inmates who had participated in the program and had been released before September 1985 were followed up for a minimum of 12 months.
Abstract
The prerelease program, operated at three centers, provides services such as referral, information, and peer counseling and classes covering a wide variety of topics (e.g., family relationships, job search, legal rights, parenting). The return rate of satisfactory program participants (19 percent) was considerably lower than the return rate to custody of nonparticipants (26 percent). Findings suggest that program participation is positively related to postrelease adjustment as measured by recidivism. 1 figure. (Author abstract modified)
