This paper presents a supplement to traditional university-based language training entitled Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum (FLAC), focusing on specialized training in professional terminology with special emphasis on the FLAC program at Boise State University’s Criminal Justice Department.
Abstract
In 1995, Boise State University undertook an interdisciplinary languages program under a Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum (FLAC) grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program was designed to enhance the development of practical language skills across professional programs in university settings. It aims at the provision of professional terminology for students who already have a conversational knowledge of a foreign language and want to extend their ability to apply those skills in a professional setting. This paper was a combination practical guide/case study of the program offering insight into how the program was initiated and carried out at BSU, specifically in the Criminal Justice Department. In the Department, the FLAC program focused on preparing students whose occupations were locally based and desired specialized language of justice terminology. The program was conceived as a way to provide valuable linguistic skills for current and future criminal justice professionals in an era of “English only” instruction ideology. The FLAC courses in the Department were generally successful. The FLAC offered a sense of cross-cultural exposure to the local Latino community not otherwise available in the criminal justice curriculum. References
