This article discusses the importance of training officers to recognize and preserve forensic evidence at shooting scenes.
Abstract
Several examples of failure to recognize forensic evidence are cited. Forensic experts quoted in this article indicate the need for all officers to be able to understand the variety of firearms evidence that can be important and to be able to determine who fired a particular shot, how the shooting occurred, who fired first, from which direction or position, how many shots were fired, and in what sequence. Cases are cited when forensic evidence was vital in disproving allegations of police wrongdoing in a fatal shooting.
