THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE METHODS OF OBTAINING IDENTIFICATIONS OF THE DECEASED THROUGH THE EXAMINATION OF HUMAN SKELETAL REMAINS.
Abstract
DENTAL IDENTIFICATION IS OFTEN RELIABLE, BUT THERE ARE MANY CASES THAT DEFY IDENTIFICATION BY THIS MANNER. THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE DETERMINATION OF AGE BY DENTAL AND SKELETAL METHODS, SEX DETERMINATION, RACE OR MAJOR GENETIC POPULATION GROUP DETERMINATION, THE APPROXIMATE STATURE, AND WHETHER OR NOT THE REMAINS WERE COMMINGLED WITH OTHER REMAINS. SPECIFIC BONES AND PROPERTIES OF BONES USEFUL IN MAKING THESE DETERMINATIONS ARE DESCRIBED. SEVERAL CASES ARE PRESENTED IN WHICH THE IDENTIFICATION OF SKELETAL REMAINS PLAYED A ROLE.
