STUDY OF THE ATTITUDES AND LIFE STYLES OF AGED AND AGING INMATES IN A CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION IN JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
Abstract
IN THIS STUDY THE EFFECTS OF INSTITUTIONAL VARIATIONS (DEPENDENT VARIABLES) ON THE INDIVIDUAL INMATE WERE MEASURED IN TERMS OF THEIR EFFECTS ON THE INMATE'S PHYSICAL CONDITION, HIS MENTAL STATUS, AND HIS SOCIAL ACTIVITY PATTERNS WITHIN THE INSTITUTION. THESE VARIABLES WERE SELECTED SO AS TO EVALUATE THE TOTAL WELL BEING OF THE INMATE, MEASURE THE DIFFERENTIAL IMPACT OF INSTITUTIONAL SETTING CHARACTERISTICS ON EACH AREA OF FUNCTIONING, AND MEASURE WHETHER DECLINE IN ONE AREA OF FUNCTIONING PRECEDED OR WAS RELATED TO DECLINE IN OTHER AREAS OF FUNCTIONING. DATA PERTAINING TO THE VARIABLES SELECTED FOR THIS STUDY WERE OBTAINED PRIMARILY FROM: (1) INTERVIEWS WITH STAFF FROM THE CORRECTIONAL SITE: (2) INFORMATION AND RECORDS KEPT BY THE INSTITUTION; AND (3) SECONDARILY, FROM INTERVIEWS AND OBSERVATIONS OF THE INMATE. A COPY OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE UTILIZED IN THE STUDY IS PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...KAP
