THE FORT WORTH POLICE DEPARTMENT'S SELECTION MODEL PRELIMINARY SCREENING PROCESS AND SUBSEQUENT ASSESSMENT CENTER PROCEDURES FOR QUALIFYING AND SELECTING ENTRY LEVEL POLICE OFFICERS ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE SCREENING PROCESS TO DETERMINE THOSE APPLICANTS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED INCLUDES A REVIEW OF THE APPLICATION, AN OCCUPATIONAL LANGUAGE WRITTEN TEST, A STRENGTH AND AGILITY TEST, A PHYSICAL EXAMINATION, BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION WITH POLYGRAPH TEST, AND A LEGAL REVIEW. ASSESSMENT CENTER EXERCISES, CONSISTING OF A WORK SIMULATION EXERCISE, GROUP EXERCISE AND A STRUCTURED INTERVIEW, FOCUS ON MEASURING THOSE ELEMENTS OF THE POLICE JOB THAT ARE LEAST AFFECTED BY EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING AND WHICH AN APPLICANT COULD REASONABLY BE EXPECTED TO BRING TO THE JOB. THESE ARE SUCH FACTORS AS SENSITIVITY TO PEOPLE, ORAL COMMUNICATIONS, TOLERANCE FOR STRESS, JUDGEMENT, AND ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY.
