This book outlines creative and effective programs designed by local officials and public agencies in response to the use of illegal drugs in their communities.
Abstract
The 74 profiles in this book are local programs that work. The best programs use a fully integrated approach; coordinate efforts to combine services and share information across jurisdictions; encourage grass-roots support; and incorporate education, treatment and law enforcement approaches. The programs fall into three broad categories: drug abuse education and prevention (the largest category); drug abuse treatment (the smallest category); and prevention of drug-related crime. Each of the programs described includes contact points for further information. The Drug Abuse Education and Prevention section of the book includes 55 programs in 23 States. The book describes Drug Abuse Treatment programs in Dallas, Texas; Orland Park, Illinois; and Glendale, California. The book concludes with descriptions of 16 Prevention of Drug-Related Crime programs in nine States.
