This directory profiles innovative community policing programs identified by mayors of cities throughout the United States with populations of 30,000 and over.
Abstract
The directory describes 126 programs. Brief program descriptions contain information on program objectives, program design, staffing, operations, and community involvement. A contact person is listed for each program. Programs are presented under general categories that reflect their aims. Program categories include comprehensive community policing programs, crime and drug enforcement, crime and drug task forces, diversion programs, domestic violence, drug abuse education, environmental improvement programs, and gang prevention and elimination. Other program categories are general crime prevention, immigrant assistance programs, improvements in police service and management, neighborhood-based crime prevention, patrol services, police/community partnerships, safety education programs for children, senior service programs, and youth programs. Two other programs that do not fit into any of the previous categories are a police unit that focuses on crimes against children and a police singing group that performs before community organizations.
