This introduction to civil and private investigation presents investigative methods and techniques that are characteristic of virtually all general private investigations, with particular attention to sources of information and surveillance.
Abstract
Most of the discussion of techniques and methods is directed at nonlaw enforcement investigators, so much of the material is not found in books discussing law enforcement investigations; however, law enforcement investigators could benefit from the use of some of the techniques described. The book examines diverse sources of information, including local, county, State and Federal records, public and private records, and informants, as well as detail pretext interviews. The discussion also deals with physical surveillance and surveillance photography, along with an outline of executive protection services. Also covered are such areas as report writing; interviews, interrogations, and statements; locating missing persons; industrial and commercial undercover operations; accident investigation; business and industrial espionage; honesty testing; store detectives; and legal constraints. Figures and an index are supplied. The appendixes provide a glossary of terms, common visual and verbal errors in vehicle license numbers, and States of origin for social security numbers.
