Introductory chapters explain the general methods and phases of investigation, the role of the investigator's notebook, and the principles of report writing. Further chapters detail the initial steps in an investigation and the use of interviews, interrogations, informants, surveillance, and other sources of information. Additional chapters explain investigative techniques appropriate to the following specific offenses: arson, narcotics violations, sex offenses, larceny, burglary, robbery, truck robbery, forgery, homicide, and criminal explosion. Also examined are the investigator's role in court, the techniques involved in identifying suspects, and the specialized scientific methods available to investigators. Photographs, figures, index, and appendixes outlining the types of white-collar crimes; requirements relating to arrest, search, and seizure; and procedures for transmitting evidence to the FBI.
