A Bayesian perspective is used to explore issues of glass evidence interpretation, based on data from two surveys of glass on clothing.
Abstract
Transfer-persistence probabilities are discussed by considering the sensitivity of the likelihood ratio. Analysis techniques are suggested for dealing with post hoc explanations of the presence of glass on a suspect's clothing. The concept of knowledge elicitation is discussed in relation to other aspects of knowledge management and changes in the way in which forensic scientists approach their casework. Advantages of using the Poisson distribution are noted, and alternative explanations for the presence of glass evidence are offered. 8 references and 4 figures
