THE BACKGROUND OF THE VERA INSTITUTE OF JUSTICE IS DESCRIBED, AND THE INSTITUTE'S PROGRESS TOWARD IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS REPORTED.
Abstract
THE VERA INSTITUTE IS A PRIVATE NONPROFIT CORPORATION FOUNDED IN NEW YORK N.Y., IN 1961. IN ITS FIRST 10 YEARS, THE INSTITUTE UNDERTOOK A NUMBER OF PROJECTS IN THE AREAS OF PRETRIAL RELEASE, DIVERSION, AND SUPPORTED WORK FOR EX-ADDICTS AND FORMER OFFENDERS. THE REPORT FOCUSES ON THE INSTITUTE'S ACTIVITIES FROM 1971 THROUGH 1976 IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: IMPROVING THE FAIRNESS AND EFFICIENCY OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN NEW YORK CITY (EXPERIMENTS IN PRETRIAL SERVICES, VICTIM/WITNESS ASSISTANCE, AND LEGAL AID); EXPANDING SUPPORTED WORK AND JOB CREATION PROGRAMS; EXPLORING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS THROUGH STRUCTURED RESEARCH IN SUCH AREAS AS FELONY DISPOSITION, CASE ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES, VIOLENCE AND DELINQUENCY, AND UTILIZATION OF FEMALE PATROL OFFICERS; AND PROVIDING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD. THE REPORT DOCUMENTS THE DETAILS OF THE INSTITUTE'S PROJECTS AND RESEARCH STUDIES FROM 1971 THROUGH 1976 AND OFFERS HIGHLIGHTS OF EARLIER UNDERTAKINGS. RESEARCH FINDINGS, SUPPORTING DATA AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION ARE INCLUDED.
